The Harrogate Hospitality and Tourism Awards aim to promote the town’s hospitality offering through celebrating and rewarding those individuals who show the highest levels of commitment and strive towards excellence on the town’s behalf.

During February and March members of the public and visitors to Harrogate were invited to nominate individuals who they thought deserved special recognition. Over 800 nominations were collected before a shortlist of 37 was chosen by judges across nine categories.

...Bar Person of the Year – sponsored by Harrogate Spring Water

...David Ritson, Chair of Destination Harrogate and General Manager of The Old Swan Hotel, said:

The awards are a fantastic event for the town and beyond. They reward not only the winners, but all those who work in every area of hospitality, recognising the effort and commitment they make on a daily basis.

Once again we received a huge number of entries this year and it was great to see such a large number of the community getting involved. ... The success of the awards in just a short space of time is also reflective in the diversity of businesses and associations getting involved, with the short list this year including not only hotels, restaurants and bars, but also a Crime Writing Festival, a Christmas Market, an aerial adventure – Log Heights and even a roller disco amongst others!

Hospitality and Tourism Awards

I have again been the official photographer for the Harrogate Hospitality and Tourism Awards 2013 and went round all the short listed nominees with a selection of the shots below.

...Harrogate Hospitality & Tourism Award organisers have announced the shortlist for each of the nine categories in their awards scheme which will be presented at a spectacular gala dinner taking place at the Royal Hall on 3rd June.

Category sponsors and organisers deliberated long and hard this week with some very tough decisions having to be made because of the large number of nominations again received this year.

The awards, now in their fifth year, are organised and hosted by Destination Harrogate, the association of the leading hotels of the town. Organiser Simon Cotton, General Manager, Cedar Court Hotel and Vice Chairman of Destination Harrogate commented, “The judges were once again impressed by the level and quality of entries this year and it took a lot of deliberating to decide who would make the short list. There were a lot of categories where it was really hard to have to leave out some really fantastic entries and I only hope that those who haven’t made it this year to the short list will try again next year. There is no doubt that the night will once again be a quick sell out and continue upon the huge success that it has been in the past five years”.

David Ritson, Chairman of Destination Harrogate, added, “Five years in to running these awards it is clear from the number of entries we received again this year, that these awards have truly captured the imagination of those working in, or affected by hospitality and tourism, and clearly shows what a major industry it is for the town. This year we even had someone ringing up asking when the voting was starting because they wanted to be so involved! Harrogate relies heavily on both business and leisure tourism and everyone involved in the chain of visitor service delivery play their part in continuing to deliver the excellent standards associated with Harrogate.”

The main shot was taken from a 15 metre platform but the truck shots were taken using the telescopic pole that I use for elevated photography. I mainly use this for property photography but as it is light weight and portable I can take some unusual shots in areas that are difficult to access.

Although it was cold outside and trying to snow it was nothing compared to being inside the cold storage freezer to photograph the racking which I believe was below -20c. I was supplied with warm clothing but you can only stay in there for so long but when I can out in to normal room temperature my camera and tripod instantly condensed then iced up. It took 20 minutes before it cleared and I was able to start taking pictures again.

It is a really impressive site with around 600 employees and works around the clock delivering to all of the major supermarkets.

...Over six hundred and fifty people were pitch side at the exhilarating finals of the Ogden of Harrogate Armada Dish and Silver Jubilee Plate competitions at Toulston Polo Ground last Sunday, 17th June, and in the process raised over £2600 for The Children’s Society.

...Teams from all over the UK took part in the fiercely competed finals of the three day competition. The day got off to an exciting start when Summit won the Ogden of Harrogate Armada Dish, just beating Beverley Polo Club 5 1/2 – 5. The final of the Silver Jubilee Competition was a nail-biting 6 -5 ½ to Ogden sponsored Leolene Lions, who narrowly secured victory over the Windsor based Mad Dogs.

...The annual tournament is sponsored by luxury jewellers Ogden of Harrogate, this year in association with prestige car dealers JCT600, who had several high performance cars on display and Ebel watches. Spectators enjoyed a champagne and jazz reception followed by a four-course luncheon in the Ogden enclosure, before settling down to an afternoon of chukkas and a browse of the Ogden of Harrogate boutique.

...“Ogden of Harrogate has been a major part of this polo tournament for the last seven years and we are really pleased to welcome JCT600 on board as an associate sponsor,” said Ben Ogden, Director of Ogden of Harrogate. ... Everyone loves the glamorous and relaxed atmosphere and we all had a fantastic day. The increasing popularity of this event demonstrates that even in a difficult economic climate, polo is continuing to go from strength to strength in the North of England and we at Ogden of Harrogate very much enjoy being involved in such an exciting sport.”

Over 700 nominations were collected before a shortlist of 33 was chosen by judges across nine categories.

David Ritson, Chair of Destination Harrogate and General Manager of The Old Swan Hotel, said:

“The awards are a fantastic event for the town and beyond. They reward not only the winners, but all those who work in every area of hospitality, recognising the effort and commitment they make on a daily basis.”
