You know the ones – overly staged shots, unnaturally perfect smiles, and close-ups of open mouths that do little to make a dental practice feel welcoming or approachable.
Instead, they wanted imagery that reflected who they really are. A modern dental practice built around people, relationships, and positive experiences.
Planning for Success
One thing that often gets overlooked in commercial photography is the importance of preparation.
Before the shoot day, I visited the practice to walk through the space, assess the available locations, identify the best natural light, and discuss exactly what imagery would be most valuable for their website, social media, and marketing materials.
This planning stage meant that when the half-day shoot arrived, we weren't wasting valuable time deciding where to work or what to photograph next. Everyone knew the plan, allowing us to work efficiently while creating a wide variety of images.
The result was a comprehensive portfolio of photographs that gave the practice plenty of options and excellent value from a relatively short shoot.
Telling a Human Story
Rather than focusing on treatments or clinical procedures, the photography centred on the people who make the practice what it is.
We captured genuine interactions between staff and patients, welcoming moments at reception, conversations between clinicians and visitors, and relaxed portraits of the team themselves.
The aim was to create images that help potential patients imagine what it feels like to visit the practice.
Friendly faces. Reassuring conversations. A calm, modern environment.
These are often the things that matter most when choosing a dentist, yet they're rarely the focus of traditional dental photography.
Real Smiles, Real People
One of the most rewarding aspects of the shoot was photographing people of all ages interacting naturally within the practice.
From families arriving for appointments to members of the team helping patients feel at ease, the emphasis was always on authentic expressions and genuine smiles.
The final collection feels approachable, modern, and relatable — a world away from stock imagery and far more representative of the experience patients can expect.
Creating a Flexible Image Library
For any business, especially healthcare providers, having a strong library of original photography is invaluable.
The images created during this session can be used across websites, social media, brochures, advertising, recruitment campaigns, and patient communications. Consistent, professional imagery helps build trust and allows businesses to present a more authentic version of themselves.
It's been particularly rewarding to see the photographs continue to be used long after the shoot itself. Seeing the images featured in social media campaigns and online marketing has been a great reminder of the value that bespoke photography can bring. Rather than relying on generic stock images, the practice now has a collection of authentic content that reflects its own team, patients, and personality, helping them communicate consistently across multiple platforms.
By investing time in planning and focusing on real people rather than predictable clichés, we created a set of photographs that will continue to work hard for the practice for years to come.
For me, that's what successful commercial photography is all about: creating images that not only look good but genuinely reflect the people behind the business.
