Taking professional photos for your school’s website and prospectus is an important task that requires careful planning. Here are some key considerations to ensure you capture the best images:
Collaborate with Prospectus and Website Designers

Speak to the team designing your website and prospectus. They may have specific suggestions on the types of images needed to complement the format and content of the materials.

Plan the Coverage Areas

Identify the subjects and themes that need to be included:

Academic subjects
Specialist areas (e.g., art studios, music rooms, or labs)
Pastoral care moments
Sports activities

Choose the Right Locations

Decide which areas of the school will be featured. For example:

A shot of the school building works best on a bright, sunny day.
Classrooms and facilities should look clean, organised, and inviting.

Involve Teachers and Staff

Engage teachers early in the planning process to get their support. Their enthusiasm can significantly influence the students’ energy and attitude in the photos.
Encourage teachers to help create dynamic classroom scenes. Practical lessons don’t always photograph well unless there’s a creative approach to making them visually engaging.

Engage Students

Capture students in action, looking up and engaged, rather than always focusing on their books or devices.
For science lessons, emphasise hands-on activities and close-up shots. Avoid dangerous or overly dramatic setups that compromise health and safety.

Pay Attention to Uniforms

Ensure students are dressed smartly and consistently. Even on hot days, blazers and ties should be worn.
Tip: Uniforms tend to look their best at the beginning of the term.

Follow a Flexible Timetable

Create a schedule to ensure all necessary shots are captured, but allow for some flexibility to adapt to unexpected opportunities or challenges on the day.

Include a mix of staged and candid photos. Set up some shots outside of regular lessons and use a variety of students to avoid repetition.
